The Hunting App can be used anywhere in Australia. It is designed for Australian hunters and outdoor users, whether you are hunting in NSW, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Western Australia or the Northern Territory.
Yes. Imported maps, downloaded map layers, saved offline map areas, waypoints, tracks and hunt plans can be used without mobile reception. Online map loading, chat, live location and other online services will need reception.
Yes. Your phone's GPS can work without mobile reception. GPS accuracy can vary depending on your device, terrain, canopy cover, sky visibility and other local conditions.
The free version allows up to 9 sq km of offline map downloads in total. That could be one area up to 3 km x 3 km, or several smaller areas adding up to the same total.
Yes. You can delete a downloaded offline map and download another area. The same total square kilometre limits apply to the free version.
Offline map downloads have a real cost to provide. The free limit allows us to offer useful offline functionality while keeping the app sustainable.
Yes. The Hunting App supports user-imported maps. This is one of the key features of the app, especially for users who already have their own maps or want to manage their own hunting areas.
Map files: GeoPDF and GeoTIFF. Data files: KML, KMZ, GPX, GeoJSON and CSV. CSV imports let you choose which columns hold your coordinates, and KMZ files can bring their own imagery and pin icons with them.
Yes. For a map to display in the correct location and work properly with GPS, it needs to contain valid location information. A standard PDF that is not georeferenced will not behave the same way as a proper geospatial map.
Usually no. Paid maps purchased through Avenza are generally locked to the Avenza platform and cannot be exported for use in other apps. If you have separately purchased or created a compatible georeferenced map file outside of Avenza, you may be able to import that file into The Hunting App.
Yes, if you export your Avenza data in a supported format such as KML, KMZ, GPX, GeoJSON or CSV.
Yes. You can mark points in the field, such as camp, vehicle, glassing spots, sign, water, shot locations and other useful locations.
Yes. You can record tracks while moving through the field.
Yes. Photos and videos can be attached to waypoints. Hunts also have their own harvest and gallery section for the photos from a trip, which is part of the paid plans.
Yes. The app supports mapped features such as points, lines and shapes.
The free version is intended to remain genuinely useful. It includes core map use, importing your own maps and data, GPS navigation, waypoints, tracks, lines and shapes, photos and videos, KMZ export, offline downloads up to 9 sq km, and joining a hunting party someone else has created.
Paid plans add unlimited offline map downloads, cloud sync and backup across devices, premium map layers, 3D terrain, sharing with other hunters, hunting parties and party chat, hunt planning and analysis tools, weather and wind, gear checklists, the hunt gallery, audio navigation and the extra export formats. Planning tools are also available in a web browser, so you can set a hunt up on a larger screen before heading into the field.
We do not intend to stop people from using their own maps. Supporting user-created maps is one of the main reasons the app exists.
Yes. You can export individual items or a whole collection, both in the app and from the web dashboard. KMZ export is free. The other formats are part of the paid plans.
KMZ, KML, GPX and GeoJSON. KMZ keeps the most detail and can be re-imported into The Hunting App without losing anything.
Yes. If you create your own georeferenced maps or export data from GIS software in a supported format, you should be able to bring that information into the app.
There is no set map import limit at this stage. The practical limits are device storage, file size and performance.
Large raster files, very high-resolution imagery, complex map files, older devices and low available storage can affect performance.
GPS accuracy depends on your phone, sky visibility, terrain, canopy cover, satellite geometry and other local conditions. The app is a field navigation tool, not a survey instrument.
The compass is a navigation aid. Accuracy can be affected by phone sensors, magnetic interference, vehicles, firearms, powerlines, phone cases and calibration.
The Hunting App provides mapping tools designed to assist you in complying with DPIRD Hunting Written Permission Conditions when hunting on NSW Public Land with an R-Licence. You remain responsible for holding a valid R-Licence and for complying with all current rules and permission conditions.
The Hunting App runs on both iOS and Android phones. A Field Lock Mode makes it usable with gloves and in tough field conditions. There is also a web dashboard at thehuntingapp.com.au for planning, importing and managing your data on a larger screen.
You do. Your imported maps, waypoints, tracks, photos and other recorded field data are your data.
No, not unless you choose to share them.
No. We do not use your private waypoints, tracks, photos or hunting information for our own hunting purposes. We also do not use your private hunting data to build hunting databases, identify hunting spots, or analyse where users are hunting.
Only if you turn cloud sync on. Cloud sync is optional and off by default, and with it off your maps and field data stay on your device. When it is on, your waypoints, tracks and licences are encrypted on your phone with a password only you know before they leave the device, so we cannot read them. Cloud and sharing features exist to help you manage and share your own information, not to harvest hunting spots or use your private field data for our own purposes.
